BUDDING explorers eager to learn bushcraft and survival skills are invited to take part in an outdoors adventure.

A new family-friendly adventure day is set to take place in Newby Bridge this February, focussed on teaching young people vital survival skills.

Ran by Greenman Survival in Newby Bridge, the Woodland Warriors session will be led by Barrovian Laura Dearden, who formerly worked as a park ranger at Haven in Flookburgh.

Ms Dearden and Greenman Survival founder, James Dixon, came up with the idea of teaching survival skill lessons to young people after seeing a gap in the market.

Ms Dearden said the pair wanted to work together to create bushcraft activities specifically tailored to young people.

She said: “Me and James both have experience in bushcraft and teaching survival skill lessons and wanted to work together to create something specifically for kids.

“I miss that line of work so we decided to start doing sessions with kids as a joint venture.

“This will be aimed at younger kids looking to learn some survival skills and immerse themselves in the outdoors.

“It will be things like den-building, nature walks, tracking and more.”

Ms Dearden said the sessions will give attendants a number of vital skills including team work and problem-solving.

“All through lockdown, kids have really gone through the mill and been stuck inside,” she said.

“We’d like to offer them something different rather than watching TV or being on your laptop.

“There’s programmes like this around Windermere but nothing which is easily accessible to young people in Barrow.

“There’s so much research which proves the benefits of being outside for young people.

“It really boosts your mental health, helps you practise your skills like team work and problem-solving. It’s educational as well – if they go camping with their parents after, we’ll have taught them the survival skills to know where to pitch a tent and how to build a fire.”

The taster sessions are taking place over two days from February 17 and 18.

The three-hour taster session costs £35 and is open to children from six years old who must be accompanied by an adult.
