From Cambridge dictionary, supremacist means someone who believes that a particular type or group of people should lead or have control over other types or groups of people because they believe they are better. This actually means that these are a group of white persons who really believe that they are superior to other race including other race of white people and generally race over people of color.
Several centuries during the era of European colonialism in the Americas, Africa, Australia, Oceania, and Asia were justified by supremacist attitudes which basically means that white supremacist are original and superior having the sole aim of ruling and domineering other lesser races and in the 19th century there is this popular phrase of the “white man’s burden” which gives the idea that whites have the prerogative to make other cultures and races to become like themselves and this ideology was widely used to justify whites imperialistic policies as a noble enterprise.
Historically speaking “white supremacy” has been dubbed with the belief that white people are far superior to people of color. As such, “white supremacy” was founded with the ideology that drives the European colonial projects and U.S. imperial projects which were used to rationalize the unjust manner they ruled the people, the lands they confiscated, and the theft of the people’s natural resources, enslavement, and genocide.
During these early periods and practices when white supremacy was actively practiced, this ideology was backed by some misguided scientific studies of physical differences on the basis of race and was also believed to take intellectual and cultural form.
The term “White Supremacy” has always been a popular phrase which is associated with American politicking and it is as a result of many other factors. Barack Obama winning the presidential election changed the demographics of white supremacy has had its own fair share of the black clash from white conservatives.
Conservatives have been known to extreme caricatures of white supremacy as a means to deflect, protect and camouflage themselves from charges that the contemporary Republican Party as a party that has a primarily white identity and an organization fueled by white racial resentment.
The liberals, progressives, and anti-racists also use the phrase “white supremacy” to depict that the open and subtle racist activities and practices of the movement of conservatism in the post-Civil Rights era, and how American society presently still is in support and is also structured around maintaining and protecting exclusive white privileges.
This analysis which forms the integral opinion of all the different groups which includes the conservatives, liberal, progressives and anti-racist are highly factual, but it has often conflated other concepts such as racism, white privilege, and white supremacy with one another. Language does political work.
White Supremacy in the U.S
The White Supremacy entered the U.S from European Colonist where it firmly took it firm roots in the early America society through genocide, slavery and internal colonization of Mexicans, Africans, immigrants from Asia and other countries.
The slavery institutionalism in the U.S., the Black Codes that limited the rights of blacks that were newly freed and which were instituted through emancipation, and the Jim Crow laws which really enforced the segregation and did limit rights of people with color and other races all combined to make the U.S. a legalized and active white supremacist society through the late-1960s.
During this period in history, that Ku Klux Klan became well-recognized as the symbol of white supremacy, which has other major historical actors and events, like the Nazis and the Jewish Holocaust, the apartheid regime of South Africa, and Neo-Nazi and white power groups today.
When Whiteness becomes the symbol of beauty
One major expression of white supremacy is the use of whiteness as the universal symbol and definition of beautiful and acceptance in modeling, for advert purposes, branding and the likes. Whiteness is conceived to superior, white people are looked at as more attractive by virtue of their whiteness and, insofar as the appearance of people of races and color deviates from that standard (whiteness) they are considered not appealing and beautiful.
Non-white and people of color can still be seen and admired as beautiful, of course, or only if they try to look like white people.
