Thursday will be a wet day for Northern California.Three waves of rain and snow begin Thursday and into the weekend.(Video above: Dec. 7 forecast at 4 p.m.)Here’s what to expect.Wet weather Thursday eveningMost of Thursday will be dry, and light rain and snow will come later in the evening. Thursday night into Friday looks on the lighter side in terms of rain with snow levels closer to 3,000 feet.The Valley could see .10 to .20 of an inch of rain. About 4 to 8 inches of snow are likely above 5,000 feet.That should be enough for chain controls for a while.More rain and snow this weekendMost of Friday will be dry in the Valley and fine for travel in the Sierra. Our weather team says that Saturday looks to be the stormiest day for the weekend. It is a Weather Impact Day for rain, snow and wind. The timing of that rain and snow will be worked out over the next few days and details could change. But it should rain almost all day with Valley totals over 1 inch. Winds will be gusty in the Valley, especially on Saturday morning with likely gusts over 40mph. Snow should fall all day in the Sierra above 5,000 feet so expect travel to be slow. There could be snow totals in the 2-feet range. Sunday will have on-again and off-again rain with light winds and snow levels could drop to the 3,500 to 4,000-foot range. Here’s what to expect.

Wet weather Thursday evening

Most of Thursday will be dry, and light rain and snow will come later in the evening. Thursday night into Friday looks on the lighter side in terms of rain with snow levels closer to 3,000 feet.

The Valley could see .10 to .20 of an inch of rain. About 4 to 8 inches of snow are likely above 5,000 feet.

That should be enough for chain controls for a while.

More rain and snow this weekend

Most of Friday will be dry in the Valley and fine for travel in the Sierra. Our weather team says that Saturday looks to be the stormiest day for the weekend. It is a Weather Impact Day for rain, snow and wind. The timing of that rain and snow will be worked out over the next few days and details could change.

But it should rain almost all day with Valley totals over 1 inch. Winds will be gusty in the Valley, especially on Saturday morning with likely gusts over 40mph.

Snow should fall all day in the Sierra above 5,000 feet so expect travel to be slow. There could be snow totals in the 2-feet range.

Sunday will have on-again and off-again rain with light winds and snow levels could drop to the 3,500 to 4,000-foot range.

Warming centers in Sacramento, Stockton open

Sacramento County is opening a warming center at DHA 28th Street Annex from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Dec. 8. It’s located at 1725 28th St. in downtown Sacramento. Learn more in the video player below.

The city of Sacramento is opening its Outreach and Engagement Center at 3615 Auburn Blvd. and the North Fifth Street Shelter lobby at 700 North Fifth Street through Dec. 8 from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
