SALT LAKE CITY — Utah health officials reported 5,866 new COVID-19 cases and 16 additional deaths over the past week.
The daily average of new cases was about 838 per day. This week’s cases marked a decrease since the previous few weeks. The week ending last Thursday, July 21, Utah confirmed 6,870 cases; and the week before that, 7,789 new cases were reported. The numbers do not include home tests.
Despite case decreases, more wastewater testing sites showed increasing or elevated virus levels compared to last week. Now 97.1% of sites have increased virus levels, a more than 30% increase over the previous week.
The percentage of emergency room visits with the coronavirus decreased slightly, however, from 5.58% to 5.13%.
On Thursday, 252 patients were hospitalized with COVID-19 throughout Utah, a slight increase over the previous Thursday, July 21, when 242 people in hospitals had the illness.
Now 1,010,292 cases have been confirmed since the start of the pandemic, as well as 4,900 deaths due to the disease.
