This little nothing of a dress, which has long since come out from under, has become a staple of contemporary wardrobes. It can be made of satin or chain mail and worn layered or sheer. Yes, there’s an aspect of lingerie dressing to a slip, but in its construction it’s a minimal garment. Its simplicity feels modern, but its allure is the way it connects the wearer to a vintage arc that extends from the soigné 1930s through the grunge and glamour of the ’90s to today.
