Apparently even a global pandemic can’t stop the emergence of a trendy summer frock. The pink tulle Strawberry Dress, with a plunging-V neckline, short ruffled sleeves, and a pattern of sequined strawberries, dominated fashion TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter over the summer. The look is almost shockingly playful and carefree, given the tenor of the times — “a dress that Cinderella, a toddler, and a A-list celebrity would all happily wear,” Vogue judged. Or maybe, as The New York Times suggested, people fell for a sweet dress because of, not despite, the grim backdrop: “The sheer horror of 2020 demands an incredulous level of mythical escapism.” The $490 original from designer Lirika Matoshi actually debuted last year, and model Tess Holliday wore a version to the pre-pandemic Grammys. But instead of taking a hit when the coronavirus rewrote the year, orders spiked over the summer, as online influencers made it the season’s It Dress — inspiring quite a few imitators. Matoshi seems to be taking it all in stride, offering a $50 sequined strawberry facemask as the ultimate complement.
