1984 was one of the best years of my life. I had just graduated from high school and was understanding and appreciating music for the first time.
The fashion and hairstyles were ridiculous and I had totally immersed myself in the look of the day. Think Flock of Seagulls.
I had my hair up in a triple perm dyed blonde at the front, shaved into a ‘v’ at the back with a 10 centimetre plaited rat’s tail dyed white to complete the look.
You could say I was committed to the Duran Duran new romantic era.
The music was really starting to sink into my psyche and my soul and it meant everything to me.
Now in this crazy lockdown world that we live in I find myself looking for things that take me back to the happiest days of my life and I’ve realised for me that is 80’s music.
I try to spend a little bit of time every day with my kids educating them about the era and dancing around the house like no one is watching. It may have been the lowest historical era for fashion but the big melodies, the big songs and even bigger hair will live on forever.
It felt like divine intervention when I was asked to host a brand new radio show that puts me right in the sweet spot of the music that I grew up listening to and love.
This has also enabled me the work/life balance that I have been desperately searching for since leaving the Today Show to spend more time with my two beautiful children.
I am truly excited that my job now involves sharing the best music of the 70s, 80s and 90s including some of the biggest hits of all time. We are rebuilding these heritage radio stations and I truly hope that people will tune in from tomorrow morning and spend a few minutes smiling and dancing to one of their favourite songs of this era.
I believe this is exactly what people need right now – a true feeling of happiness and joy that invokes great memories from the past.
Listen in tomorrow from 6am on 2UE 954AM in Sydney, Magic 1278AM in Melbourne, 4BH 882AM in Brisbane and 6GT DAB+ in Perth.
