Serving you inspiring ideas to create an Indian inspired space.
Here is an ode to the quintessential Indian interior design, as we venture about the evolution of living room set-ups over the years taking inspiration from the homes of many. As we recall the memorable home decor pieces that have dawned through most of our childhoods, we establish the beauty of Indian living rooms.
Indian homes are very different in many aspects ranging from decor, architecture, choice of furniture, to the current idea of living in a functional and intuitive space. Since inception, Indian interior design in homes have always exuded a persona of radiance and energy and is seen through the collectibles and decorative pieces that bring about this wholesomeness. Indian living rooms will always be the shrine of the many Buddha statues, bespoke homemade furniture and memorabilia of the loved ones. The living room of the typical and quintessential indian home is a ball of warmth and comfort.
Growing up, the most common sightings in my living room were the rare collection of books, dated back to 1946, that belonged to my grandfather. In my living room, I often spotted heirloom pieces that were brought down from generations. However, growing up I noticed that it wasn’t necessarily the same with my friends’ homes, as they dotted vibrant collectibles from their family travels from all around the country. The very idea that India is a multi-lingual and diverse country is what takes inception in the decor for the typical indian living room.
Bright colours, exotic indian motive prints, the nature inspired decorative accents and lots of layering, is a gist of the living room. In this feature, we explore the various living room ideas that you can incorporate to create an Indian inspired Living room for your home.
The Vintage Abode:
The vintage charm; widely popular of the 20th century, vintage homes dawned the homes of the affluent. The wood carvings, upholstery, heavy tassels paired with dim lighting, a neatly stacked wall-sized bookshelf and all warm hues complemented with browns. If you don’t have the extra square feet for a separate drawing room, does not mean you can’t incorporate elements of this rustic environment in your Indian style living room.
Plants and Pouffs:
Plants have a way of giving life to any space, be it a barren wall, or an empty corner, with the addition of over sized plants makes it a cornerstone investment for your indian styled living room. To add an earthy vibe to your Indian style living room, consider sprucing up with some tall greenery. Tall structures in a home add depth into space, and not forget can give you the feeling of an outdoor space. Adding to the look, pouffes are a great way to embellish a humble abode. They look fun and casual and do much to make your living room appear warm and fuzzy.
Art speaks volumes, and investing in the right artworks or paintings can also become a great conversation starter. Bold artwork adds graphic to a space, no matter how minimal or maximal, art completes the look of your living room. A statement piece in your Indian style living room can bring in a breath of fresh air through the mild colours brought by the interior of the home. If bright colours are not your cup of tea, then a beautifully handcrafted painting of ancient India or a collector’s piece that brings a refreshing vintage charm can do just as good a job.
A Hanging Chair:
I’ve always found something extremely fascinating about a hanging chair inside a living room. A hanging chair acts as an independent nook, away in depth from the rest of the living room. Imagine reading your favourite novel and sipping some warm cocoa all wrapped up and cosy like a cocoon in your favourite room. Did we over-do the dreamy? God bless the creator! Whether you choose to incorporate one as a cosy corner in your Indian living room or a focal point in your small apartment hall.
