This Bank Holiday weekend Olympic Gold Medallist and Celebrity Masterchef winner Greg Rutherford will join Olympic 400m legend Iwan Thomas in providing at home entertainment for Brits in Lockdown, during weekend-long VE Day festival held by The Great British Campout, in support of NHS Charities Together.
Sporting friends and British Olympic legends Greg Rutherford and Iwan Thomas are amongst a host of talented individuals who will be keeping thousands of virtual festival-goers entertained in their homes over the VE Day Bank Holiday weekend, joining fitness instructors, outdoors bushcraft experts and gifted musicians.
In true British spirit, VE day itself will see festival-goers join in a two-minute silence of remembrance at 11am, traditional afternoon tea, and a viewing of then-Prime Minister Mr Churchill’s speech from 8 May 1945 where he announced the war in Europe was over.
Inspired by his time on Celebrity Masterchef last year, retired track and field athlete Greg will be joining in the day’s activities by cooking up a simple burger-based dish in his garden. He’ll be camping at home alongside his family and in support of charity. Greg will lead the way in raising a toast to neighbours and everyone playing their part in the fight against Coronavirus.
British band ‘The Face’ will proceed to play a set, ending at 9pm with a tribute to Vera Lynn’s inspiring British classic ‘We’ll Meet Again’.
How it all started
When the UK entered lockdown in late March, dad-of-two Ian Alcorn set up a JustGiving fundraising page with the hope of encouraging a few of his friends to raise one-hundred pounds for NHS staff, by staying home and camping out in their garden or living rooms. No later than one week on, Ian had raised over one-hundred thousand pounds and secured the backing of GO Outdoors in the hope of achieving an incredible new target of five-hundred thousand pounds for NHS Charities Together.
Taking part in campouts since, Ian said about the upcoming festival:
“It’s been a whirlwind couple of months and we as a family continue to be overwhelmed by the support of our Great British Campout community and the British public in helping us raise money for our all-important NHS staff.
“From a few mates camping in the garden to hosting a virtual festival with Olympic athletes, in just a few weeks we’ve achieved some amazing things together and we are incredibly excited about this weekend’s festival and the prospect of reaching our new target of half-a-million pounds for NHS Staff.”
Speaking about his involvement, Greg commented: “It’s a privilege to take part in something so positive at this difficult time. I’m delighted to get involved in a festival which celebrates true British spirit whilst we stay at home, and to be raising money for our incredible NHS staff alongside a variety of talented acts is a real honour.
“Lockdown has provided me the opportunity to continue my passion for cooking after winning last year’s Celebrity MasterChef and I’m excited to rustle up something which will hopefully help bring us all together with a shared passion for great food and a love of our outdoors – even if it is our garden or balcony!”
Closing the festival on Sunday 10th May will be European (1998) and Commonwealth 400m Champion, British 400m record-holder and Olympic silver medallist Iwan Thomas. An OS GetOutside Champion, Iwan hosted ‘The Great British Outdoor Quiz’ last Monday evening, which was a roaring success with fans. He’ll be charming quizzing festival-goers on Sunday evening with a special guest appearance from friend Greg.
Iwan added: “I’m excited to once again be putting my newly discovered quiz-hosting skills to the test, and to be doing so at this time to support NHS Charities Together is a particular privilege. I’m looking forward to working with Greg and the rest of The Great British Campout team to support bringing the outside in and putting on a feel-good festival at this particularly challenging time.”
Greg will go live on Instagram on Friday 8th May at 5pm and again on Saturday 9May at 1pm. Iwan will close the festival alongside Greg on Sunday 10 May at 8pm, with ‘The Great British Outdoor Quiz’ hosted via their Instagram pages.
