‘From cheeks to eye lids, it’s all about the shimmer’
“Shimmer never truly left, we’re just moving from neutrals to neons,” says makeup influencer Shreya Kamdar. For makeup enthusiasts, all that sparkles is surely gold, and silver, and bronze and every other popping shade you can think of! “What is more eye-catchy than glitter? Be it your lids, lips or cheeks, glitter and shimmer have been put on a pedestal,” Shreya adds. Those who are not fans of colour are opting for nude and pink shimmers to get that glassy glow.
As for the lips, glosses, which used to be a staple for artists at one point, were ditched during the matte-finish obsession. But not only are they back in trend, they are now being used to define lids as well. “A glowy tint gives your lips a feeling of being plump, which is the current obsession, and pairing it with glitter/gloss on the lids completes the look without going overboard,” she says.
‘Bringing back the classics, but with a twist’
Thanks to the Y2K revival, loud makeup and bold looks are becoming hot favourites. They’re a stark reminder of the classic 90’s and serve unapologetic trends like frosted eye shadows, lined, ombre lips and faux freckles. “Eye makeup has become boundless now. There’s no dearth of experiments you can do with your eyeliners and eye shadows. I’ve had clients requesting dramatic eye looks like metallic rainbow eyes, negative space cut creases, dotted or squared graphic liners or even wearable gemstones,” says Mumbai-based makeup artist Prachi Shah. If you’ve caught even a single episode of Euphoria, you know what we’re talking about. The OTT looks once considered too “out there” have boldly entered the mainstream.
Another Y2K trend picking up once again is lined lips, a dark lip liner combined with 2 to 3 shades lighter lip shade. “The lined lips of the 90’s and the current craze of Korean ombre lips have given character to the simple act of putting on lipstick. While lined lips go from darker outside to lighter inside, gradient ombre is its exact opposite. It’s all about blending two or more shades seamlessly to give a graduation effect inward or outward,” Prachi adds.
“We are moving away from the idea that makeup just has to enhance your look. It has become an extension of your personality and how you choose to express yourself,” Kamdar adds.
How to nail the glossy, high shine look?
- Starting with eyes, first apply foundation or eyeshadow primer. Choose a cream-based eyeshadow for base shade. Avoid powdered shadows to prevent creases after applying gloss
- Use an eyeshadow brush, gloss applicator, or a finger to apply the gloss/glitter lightly
- For the face, go for the basic routine of a primer, a liquid foundation, and a concealer
- Apply a metallic highlighter – cream-based, stick or powder-based to your cheeks and temples. Apply thin coat and ensure to blend it well
- For an exaggerated look, apply a statement blush – rose, pink or orange, generously
- Use two coats of waterproof mascara to accentuate the eyes
- You can finish off the look by applying a lip tint or matte lipstick for the base and topping it with a natural gloss
- Finalise with a setting powder and a setting spray and you’re good to go!
Expert tip – If you have oily skin and large pores, use mattifying primer and foundation. Avoid applying highlighter on cheekbones because your natural oils would make it messy. Instead, apply it on the perimeter of your face, bridge of the nose and brow bones. Ditch the setting powder and directly apply the spray.
