Growing up in the 90’s meant being big fans of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Everyone loved watching them play Michelle Tanner on Full House and checking out their direct-to-video movies.
It’s interesting to think about how famous the twins were and how they live their lives out of the spotlight now. Very little is known about them, but fans know a few things, such as the Olsen twins’ amazing New York City real estate and their relationship with sister Elizabeth Olsen.
The Olsen twins eventually were paid $80,000 for Full House episodes
It seems that because Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen became so famous at such a young age, they had super packed schedules, and they didn’t always love having to be interviewed so much.
The Olsen twins did a 1992 CNN interview, and as MTV.com points out, they didn’t seem thrilled to be there. They said “no” when asked if they wanted to be regular kids who weren’t famous, but they also imitated their fans who constantly came up to them, asking for autographs.
It must have been tough being so young and being in the public eye. According to MTV.com, the Olsen twins’ manager, the entertainment lawyer Robert Thorne who became the CEO of Dulstar, told Fortune Magazine, “They are a property now, aside from being people with a heartbeat.”
Life and Style Mag notes that when Mary-Kate was interviewed by Marie Claire in 2010, she said, “I look at old photos of me, and I don’t feel connected to them at all. I would never wish my upbringing on anyone.”
It’s very clear that the Olsen twins weren’t big fans of working so much as kids, and they didn’t enjoy interviews. Mary-Kate also said they were “little monkey performers.”
A Private Fashion World
It’s definitely worth noting that in recent years, the Olsen twins have been working hard in the fashion industry, and it seems that they much prefer this to acting. Hearing what the twins have said about growing up in Hollywood, it makes sense that they would want to live on their own terms.
The Olsen twins also don’t have Instagram accounts or any other type of social media. They seem to love running their company without updating fans on what they’re doing regularly or sharing selfies or vacation photos.
According to Cheat Sheet, Ashley said to The Edit, “We don’t dive into that world [of social media]; we don’t have Instagram or Facebook. So we’ve never been connected to our customers or our fans in that way. We’ve stayed quite sheltered.”
In 2006, the Olsens started their fashion brand The Row. According to Another Mag, the brand’s website explains what it’s all about: “Focusing on exceptional fabrics, impeccable details, and precise tailoring, the house combines a timeless perspective with subtle attitudes which form an irreverent classic signature. The Row’s collections also explore the strength of simplistic shapes that speak to discretion and are based on uncompromising quality.”
The twins also started their other brand, Elizabeth and James, and according to Refinery 29, they have partnered with Kohls.
In 2019, the Olsens were interviewed by British Vogue, and according to W Magazine, this “rare” interview proved that they love fashion and want people to know how hard they work.
Ashley said, “It was very hard at the beginning” as they just wanted people to know they were the real deal in fashion. Mary-Kate said, “But this is the way we chose to move forward in our lives: to not be in the spotlight, to really have something that speaks for itself.”
When Fuller House was announced, people wondered if the Olsen twins would return to play Michelle Tanner. After all, Michelle, Stephanie, and DJ were super close, and wouldn’t something be missing without this character?
According to Cinemablend, Ashley said, “‘I have not been in front of a camera since I was 17, and I don’t feel comfortable acting” and before too long, it was clear that the twins weren’t going to make an acting comeback.
According to Life and Style Mag, in 2008, Mary-Kate Olsen said, “It’s weird to be called a celebrity or talk about it… It’s not a part of my life. It’s a media perception of who I am. To be written about—that aspect—I don’t think anybody should have to live that way, when people are trying to pry into your life. You give, you give, you give. You talk, you talk, you talk. And at a certain point, you start to keep your mouth shut, and then people freak out about that.”
While many people feel nostalgia when they think about the Olsen twins, as they loved their moves, TV shows, and how adorable they were, it’s totally understandable that they would want to take a step back from fame now that they’re adults.
