Julia Roberts is often hailed as a 90s fashion icon. With wild and free auburn curls, high-waisted jeans and chic blazers, her fashion choices will be talking points for decades to come. Her looks in Pretty Woman, in particular, inspired thousands.
Nowadays, fans and celebrities alike strive to capture her effortless glamour. One thing is for sure: the 90s style is back and thriving on social media as famous females and new generations of fans take on her trends.
Julia Roberts Wore Daring Outfits in the 90s
Julia Roberts is well known for her performances and wardrobes in Erin Brockovich and a slew of romantic comedies, however, her style in the Pretty Woman era is the most coveted in the present day.
Her most recognizable fashion pieces included: crop tops, high-waisted pants, turtle-neck sweaters, and heeled boots or slip-on loafers. She often completed her looks with John Lennon-style sunglasses and a long blazer.
Roberts was also well-known for wearing men’s suit jackets and oversized suits. At the Golden Globe Awards in 1990, the actress wore a Giorgio Armani pantsuit which was a few sizes too big. She also wore a purple, patterned tie and traditional men’s dress shoes, and left her hair carefree and curly.
Though some may have thought this was a questionable fashion choice, no one was questioning her when she received the “best-supporting actress in a motion picture” award for her role in Steel Magnolias. Her acceptance speech was just as iconic as her outfit and touched millions of viewers.
Reflecting on the look in a 2014 interview with InStyle, Roberts said, “I had a very whimsical sense of humor… I clearly didn’t care what anybody thought about it.”
Little did she know how positive the reaction would be, or that her pantsuit would go on to inspire dozens of actresses.
Female Celebrities Who Have Also Worn Suits on a Red Carpet
Though Julia Roberts was not the first female celebrity to wear a pantsuit to a red carpet, many famous females seem to have followed in her footsteps. Several of them have also worn pantsuits as a form of symbolism.
At the 2016 Grammys, for instance, Zendaya wore an oversized, tuxedo-style pantsuit, complete with a blonde mullet wig.
“The Grammys is a fun award show and a bit edgier than my last red carpet event, so my amazing stylist, Law Roach and I decided to try a whole new approach,” she explained to SELF. “Together we picked out this awesome menswear-inspired suit and decided I would keep my makeup a bit more natural to balance out my look.”
Though Zendaya did not confirm whether her outfit had a symbolic meaning, many fans pointed out that the ensemble was reminiscent of the late David Bowie, who passed away in 2016 from cancer.
Hailey Bieber Claimed Julia Roberts as Her Fashion Muse
Hailey Bieber revealed on social media that she took the time to watch Notting Hill, the 1999 rom-com featuring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. Her fans could only assume that her next few posts were inspired by Roberts and the movie.
In her Instagram stories, Bieber posted three pictures of Roberts rocking three different 90s styles. The first photo showed her in a crop top and loose-fitting, black and white striped pants. The second displayed Roberts in a striped blazer. The third featured the actress in a leather jacket and a black beret. Hailey Bieber wrote “icon” over the last photo.
It’s safe to say that Bieber, and maybe a few other celebrities, could end up wearing Roberts-inspired pieces in the near future.
