PHOENIX ( 3TV/CBS 5 ) – The Suns mania is at an all-time high and it reminds many of that same energy back in 1993.
Arizona’s Family took a trip back in time with some of the biggest Suns fans to what life…and the game of basketball…was like back then.
“We were season ticket holders back in the old Coliseum,” said Chris Herstam, who went to all of the finals home games back in ’93. “I was a junior in high school,” said Dan Blanchette. “This is the ‘win lose or “tie,” said Alan Schrey, showing us a special tie decorated for the 1993 finals.
In 2021: It’s all about Booker, CP3, and Deandre Ayton. But in the ’93 NBA finals against the Chicago Bulls. “Charles Barkley, Tom Chambers, Dan Majerle, Kevin Johnson, Mark West,” said Herstam.
The players weren’t the only differences though, life looked a lot different too. The undeniable 90s commercials that you could never get out of your head, like “sock ‘em boppers” and “moon shoes.”
Barbie was the number one toy for Christmas in 1993, and the infamous “super soaker” had recently come out. Oh yeah, and the prices too.
“The price of my ticket was $44,” said Schrey. He used his landline to call in for those $44 tickets to the finals game.
Blanchette, who was a teenager at the time, tried to win his tickets by entering a radio contest for best decorated doors. But hey, this *is* Arizona.
“To stand out I should decorate the cactus that was in my yard and my dad was very kind and allowed me to do that,” said Blanchette. “I had a life size poster of KJ. I don’t recommend that to people at home because you get hurt, you could get hurt!” he laughed.
And Herstam went to all of the finals home games in ‘93 with his wife. He said noticeably there was one huge difference to now. “You didn’t have any social media, you didn’t have any Twitter,” he said.
For these fans, part of the excitement certainly is the 90s nostalgia, but also where they are in life now, 28 years later.
“When I was watching the finals with my dad, when I was 16, to be a father now, that the next time they would be in the finals that I would be a father!” said Blanchette.
They say 90’s fashion is back in style. Well, so are the Phoenix Suns.
