A recent study has revealed that hybrid immunity — previous infection coupled with vaccination —provides better protection against severe Covid-19, and hence, Indians are “relatively safer” against severe impacts as nearly 70% of them, as per the ICMR sero survey, have been infected at least once with the virus and 95% of the adults have received at least two doses of vaccination. The meta-analysis study, published in Lancet Infectious Disease, is based on an analysis of 11 studies reporting the protective effectiveness of previous Covid infection and 15 studies reporting the protective effectiveness of hybrid immunity. It states that individuals with hybrid immunity had the “highest magnitude and durability” of protection against severe Covid than an infection alone. Hybrid immunity may also help inextending the period before which booster vaccination is needed.
