The San Francisco 49ers have built their offense through Deebo Samuel all season long, and his 27-yard touchdown run is the difference in the first half against the Cincinnati Bengals. It was Samuel’s sixth touchdown run of the year, giving the 49ers a 17-6 halftime lead over the Bengals.
Samuel has 11 combined touchdowns from scrimmage this year to lead the 49ers, who are clawing through the Bengals’ run defense in the first half. San Francisco has 10 carries for 59 yards in the opening 30 minutes to pace the offense, led by Samuel’s four carries for 33 yards. With Eli Mitchell out, Jeff Wilson has five carries for 22 yards to lead 49ers running backs.
George Kittle hauled in a 14-yard touchdown with 18 seconds left in the first half, as the 49ers took advantage of a Darius Phillips muffed punt in the final two minutes to extend the lead. A taunting call from Vonn Bell also extended the drive after Cincinnati stopped San Francisco on third down. Jimmy Garoppolo found Kittle on the next play to make it 17-6.
The Bengals have two field goals from Kevin McPherson in the first half, but also had a touchdown taken off the board after the officials ruled Ja’Marr Chase didn’t haul in a 37-yard completion in the end zone. That score — if upheld — would have put Cincinnati in a tie with San Francisco (assuming McPherson converts the extra point) heading into the half. Phillips has two muffed punts in the first half that has led to 10 San Francisco points.
The 49ers hold the final playoff spot in the NFC and need a win to stay ahead of five NFC teams in the playoff race at 6-7 (San Francisco enters the game at 6-6). The Bengals need a win to hold one of the three wild card spots in the AFC, a wild race where nine teams are battling for those three spots. Cincinnati is a half game up on the Indianapolis Colts for the final playoff spot.
