Ahh, the ’90s- the era that gave us Nokia bricks, iconic pop culture moments and hours worth of corny wedding soundtracks.
The catwalks had some pretty good moments as well, so we’re happy to see 90s fashion trends making a triumphant comeback for summer 2021.
But if you’re not sure how to embrace the latest styles or you’re worried about looking a tad too Ginger Spice, we got you; here are 10 simple ways to nail the ’90s fashion.
1. Animal prints
Cheetah is cute, but if you want to add a contemporary twist to your outfit, look for bold zebra and funky cow patterns. These Reclaimed Vintage mom jeans are pretty loud, but if you have the confidence, then go for it. The monochrome colour palette means these will pair well with most of the items in your wardrobe already, and the laid-back mom fit is both flattering and on-trend.
We can’t get enough of pastel hued ombre- and it looks like Love Island stars feel the same way, since this particular Boohoo two-piece has been spotted on everyone from Kady McDermott to Jess Gale. Perfect for holidays (or staycations), this dress and top combo is guaranteed to be a huge winner on the ‘gram, and the versatility of the co-ord means you can mix and match to suit your mood.
3. All denim everything
Remember when double denim was the most en vogue fashion statement you could make? It quickly became a fashion faux pas around the late ’00s, but we’re pleased to see that denim has made a bit of a comeback recently. The halterneck design on this Asos slip dress looks like something you’d see being worn by the heroine of a ’90s teen movie.
4. Little sunglasses
Another wardrobe winner, little sunglasses have been on the fashion radar for the last few months and they don’t look set to go anywhere anytime soon. These tiny frames and yellow colourway nail the look, but if you’re not sure what sunglasses style best suits you, check out our guide to choosing the right sunglasses for your face shape.
5. Big hair
If there’s one trend that truly embodies ’90s trends, it’s big, bouncy hair. The Revlon One-Step Volumiser or the Dyson Airwrap fit the bill for this, but if you want to know about the secret hair tool that our Editors love, check out our review of the Tresemme Volume Smooth and Shape Hot Brush.
6. Knot-front blouses
The knot-front top gets a style upgrade for 2021, with fluted sleeves and long wavy ties taking centre stage. This Boohoo blouse scores top marks on all fronts, with a satin finish that makes it perfect for dressing up and a dreamy ombre print that masters two trends in one. Equal parts effortless and chic, this blouse is another Love Island favourite.
One of the most iconic sneakers in the world, hi-tops are a signature throwback to ’90s fashion. These Adidas kicks have a fresh style and a neutral colourway that’ll allow them to pair well with your existing wardrobe. The vulcanised rubber platform promises enhanced durability, and the pull tab makes these easy to slip on and off. Check out our guide to cleaning white shoes to make sure you know how to take care of them.
8. Halter tops
Love them or hate them, they’re back in style in a big way. But the haltertop doesn’t have to be intimidating, as this Bershka top proves. The Scandi brand’s take on the trend offers a flattering neckline and a mellow, easy-to-wear print.
9. Oversized blazers
Oversized blazers dominated the runways of the ’90s, and we’re pleased to see this chic, smart-casual trend making a triumphant return for summer 2021. We can’t get enough of the ombre either, and these ice cream-inspired shades are a great way to breathe some fresh life into your new season looks.
10. Tiny bags
Because you need something to carry your tiny sunglasses around in, right? This butter-yellow Monki bag is still large enough for your phone, keys and a lipstick or two, and it zips shut and sits snugly under your arm. Pair with a claw clip and a racerback crop top, and you’ll be giving off all kinds of retro, ’90s fashion vibes.
