National Fishing and Boating Week (NFBW) is June 4th through 12th this year, which means this weeklong celebration is the perfect reason to take friends and family fishing or learn new fishing and boating skills. In addition to 2022, you might be wondering when is National Fishing and Boating Week each year? Each year NFBW is held during the first week of June.

What is National Fishing and Boating Week about exactly?

National Fishing and Boating Week was proclaimed nationally by former American president George W. Bush in 2002 to create awareness regarding the benefits of being outdoors and to help contribute to conservation by protecting our national waterways. In addition to providing opportunities for recreation, fishing and boating play key roles in our economy by supporting jobs and generating revenue that goes back to protecting and conserving resources at the local level.

National Fishing and Boating Week Activities

If you need a few ideas on how you can participate, check out these six things you can do to #GetOnBoard with National Fishing and Boating Week activities this year.

1. Check the list of free fishing days in your state

Free fishing days are a great opportunity for beginners to try fishing for the first time. Some states, such as Florida, even offer free fishing weekends – where anglers can go fishing without a license. Take advantage of free fishing days or weekends in your state by taking a friend or family member out on the water for the day.

2. Learn how to tie new fishing knots

Learn how to tie new fishing knots by watching the videos on the Take Me Fishing YouTube Channel.

3. Get a Fishing License

Buy a fishing license and start planning a summer fishing adventure with your family or friends. All funds from fishing licenses go to the conservation of your state’s waters.

4. Take a boating safety course

Check with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or your state agency to find out if a boating safety course is being offered in your local area during National Fishing and Boating Week.

5. Check out the Places to Fish and Boat Map

Reference the interactive Places to Fish and Boat Map to find new fishing spots that you can explore this summer with your family.

6. Find a local fishing seminar

Find a local fishing course or fishing derby in your area to participate in. Tackle shops, boat shows, and fishing clubs are great ways to learn more about fishing and get updates on local fishing events.

What is National Fishing and Boating Week? Now you have the answer and a list of things you can do to celebrate. Get outside with your family and friends to make the most it!
