2023 Hair Trends
Messy Updos
It’s time to let loose! “I feel like romantic, tousled hair is coming back,” says celebrity hairstylist Reagan Link. “Sleek hair has been in for a while, so that’s why I foresee more textured hair making a comeback this coming year.”
Big, Bouncy Blowouts
Link sees hot rollers and other volumizing tools standing out strong in the new year.
“I’ve been seeing a lot more influencers wearing this hairstyle in recent months,” she says. “It’s also been a requested style by many of my clients. I’ve seen it more often now in December 2022 than any other time in the past few years.”
Choppy Layers
If you’re still not used to the wolf cut, get prepared because the hype is probably only going to heighten from here.
“I feel like this look is going to be taken to more of an extreme next year and people are going to want more layers and more texture than they have before,” Link says. “Nineties style is totally back and I think the haircuts will follow along. Think the iconic Jennifer Aniston haircut.”
Bold Accessories
If you’ve noticed a rise in fun hair accents, you can expect the trend to stay.
“I’ve seen more creative hair accessories in the past year than ever before and I don’t see that changing,” Link says. “Companies like Lelet NY have taken over Instagram, and I feel they’ll have a major influence on the new year’s hair trends.”
Hair Sticks
You know the kind of sticks that allow you to put your hair up without using a hair tie? Well, they’re making a comeback.
“Going back to Jennifer Aniston, this was one iconic hairstyle,” Link says. “She wore these back in the ‘90s and I’ve been seeing it more and more all over social media. With the ‘90s heavily influencing fashion trends, I see this hairstyle taking off this year.”
Solid Colors
You can expect to see non-highlighted hair become more common this year, but that doesn’t mean boring.
“Beautiful, healthy, one-color hair is what I envision,” celebrity hairstylist Kathleen Riley says. “It’ll be rich and shiny. I think people are embracing a more natural look and elevated vibe. People are going back to their natural hair color. If they add any dimension it’ll be more subtle. I think this is going to be more popular because it’s less maintenance and less damaging. It also looks really beautiful.”
Chocolate Brown Color
Coinciding with the aforementioned natural, healthy hair, Riley says she expects chocolate brown in particular to break out. “A rich brown with subtle dimension is what I see becoming popular,” she notes. “Dark hair, in my opinion, always looks rich and healthy.”
Short Cuts
Because of the focus on hair health, celebrity hairstylist Cherilyn Farris thinks people are going to do major chops in the new year. “I expect bobs and collarbone-length cuts to come back,” she says. “I think big changes for hair will be a welcome fresh start to the new year.”
Tapered Haircuts for Longer Hair
Farris sees a natural, versatile evolution from shags and wolf cuts. “The movement and layers keep long hair from looking too overwhelming or bulky,” she says.
Flipped Hair
With big ‘90s blowouts trending for the last few years, Farris sees blowdry styles leaning into smoother strands with a slight bend and flip on the ends that are reminiscent of the ‘00s.
High Ponytails
Mid-low ponys and buns have had a good run, and Farris now predicts higher styles with texture will be on the rise. “It’s instantly more playful and perky,” she says.
Purposely Sloppy Styles
Clean girl aesthetic, who? Farris expects to see an element of grunge across all hair categories next year. “I envision styles that seem a bit undone or thrown up quickly,” she says.
